3 fuzzy areas

After having a complete mental block and feeling like I didn't understand anything I have used the time to reflect on what I have learnt and what I am still learning from my practice. Trying to pinpoint a generalised area of learning has been the hardest thing but I think I am getting there. I have been looking at my areas of learning one at a time and trying to research literature and theories behind them. So far I have one area of learning researched - yay! It is amazing how much I have found and want to use in my essay but reading past students blogs I have noted not to go off on a tangent and stick to your point so this is something I am actively trying to take on board. I have booked a 1-1 with Dr Sam to discuss my ideas and check I am on the right page. Fingers crossed.

A great exercise that helped me discover my areas of learning was from the Module 1 handbook:
  1. Start by making a list of things you have learnt
  2. What was the situation you first remember the lesson being learnt?
  3. How did it change what you do now?
  4. How have I transferred the learning to other areas or situations?
They gave the example of:
  1. Having to perform with a sprained ankle
  2. Learning how to care for my ankles
  3. Changed the way I warmed up and took more care preparing
  4. Transferred the idea of taking the time to prepare properly when I had an interview
Generalising this experience to two areas of learning:
  1. Preparing for important events
  2. Injury prevention
I am still struggling to pinpoint my learning to a generalised area but I am hoping this will become clearer after my 1-1. At the moment I have three fuzzy areas of what my learning could be:
  1. The Fear of Rejection
  2. Communication and Language
  3. Relationships
Will hopefully be able to articulate and write about these ideas further after I check I am on the right path!

Plan of action for this week:

  • Go back through the handbook and link theories to my areas of learning
  • Research and look further into Areas of Learning 2 and 3
  • Constantly push to unpack thoughts and reveal a generalised area of learning
  • Map out how I want my essay to look
  • Prepare to start writing
Hope everyone is doing okay, check in soon.

  1. Hi Abi,

Another great blog! I'm really interested in your ideas and what you intend to explore further. Great that you've got your one to one booked to discuss these and check that you're on the right path. I have just had my one to one and feel reassured that my AOL ideas have been thought out and are catered to my practise. I prepared for mine by mind mapping my three areas, discussing the different areas of reflection and choosing specific points to focus on. I really resonated with your point of not going off on a tangent as I feel this is what I have done, going through the handbook I'm gaining all this knowledge and I'm trying to expand my AOL's too much.

I look forward to reading more of your blogs and learning how your experiences slot into these AOL's.

Have a great week and one to one. Ellie x

    1. Hi Ellie,

Thank you! I am glad your 1-1 went okay and you can invest your time into throughough research and extensive thoughts for your areas of learning. And maybe start writing your essay?! If you haven't already. I think mind mapping is a great way to see how many areas of learning we actually have and how they all relate to our practice. I have definitely found going through the handbook and linking specific points to theories has really helped and given me a good starting point on different things I can expand on but like you say it can expand so much that sometimes we have to reign it in. It shows that we are passionate about what we are doing though!

I know you will have found some great areas to focus on and I can't wait to read more about them.

Hope you had a fab weekend, Abi x

  2. Hi Abi, I feel like you've got some great learning areas there which you could deeply explore. Not going off on a tangent is my biggest problem as with each area I'm trying to decide on I just keep adding and adding ideas. This isn't useful however, as I know the AOL's need to be informative but not pages long. I hope that your further work this week helps! I'm at a similar point to you now and hesitant to start writing but I think I just need to approach it in a more relaxed way and hope this writing talk next week will help a lot x

    1. Hi Niamh,

Thank you! They all have so much surrounding them its picking a couple of specific things to focus on - this is proving the hardest part! I think sometimes we have just got to go for it and correct as we are going along. I saw in a previous students blog that she wrote everything she wanted to say in her essay and it was way over the word count but she went back and took out the parts she felt was going off on a tangent or not as important as another part. I think this will be the way I approach my writing when starting the essay. Constant reviewing and changing which I suppose this is reflection-on-action.

Looking forward to the writing talk this week and connecting with you soon,

      Abi x
